The walled renaissance town of Vera is one of the most important commercial centres of the Costa Almeria. Originally the town was called Baria and was located at the seaside, but when the Arabs came they moved the town to the hill of Espiritu Santo. In 1518 however, an earthquake destroyed it. Vera as it is known nowadays, was built in the 16th century in Renaissance style and was enlarged in the 18th century.
Vera now is a prosperous town with a great variety of shops, many selling locally made handicrafts. Another traditional attraction is the local exquisite cuisine that as well can be found in restaurants as in small tapas bars.
