Ubrique

Ubrique is a little town in the Cádiz province. It is nestled in the foot of the Sierra de Ubrique Mountains. The town is known for its flourishing leather production. You can find many small and big factories that produce leather so it is one of the most important industrial and trade center of Andalucia.

History indicates that the original name of Ubrique was ‘Ocuri’ in Roman times. It was a violent period marked by constant battles over the land, fought between the Romans, Muslims, and the armies of the Catholic monarchs. Finally, in 1490, the Catholic Kings gave the Ubrique territory to the Dukes of Arcos.

Ubrique

The War of Independence occurred some time after, which was a very heroic time for the people of Ubrique. The Ubriqueños, with the aid of people from nearby towns, overcame and defeated the invading French Imperial Guard.

In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War many of the Ubrique’s historical artifacts were destroyed.
