Popular Traditions

The holidays in Spain are generally similar throughout the country, with only a few minor additional local holidays varying from town to town.

The year starts with New Years’ Day on January 1st. Then, beginning in late February all the way to April, the Lenten Season is observed. This is a solemn time in Spain and culminates with the Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) sometime in April. The Holy Week culminates in Easter Sunday. The Holy Week commemorates the events leading up to and including the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ.

In June, a Romeria (“pilgrimage”) devoted to the Divine Shepherd takes place. On this day, the people journey to a secluded shrine containing an image of the Divine Shepherd.

In August, Villaluenga celebrates the feast of San Roque. And from August 31st to September 3rd, the local folk honor the village’s patron saint, the Virgin of the Rosary. This is the major feast day dedicated to the saint, and is a huge event in Villaluenga, marked with festivities and merrymaking for the entire duration. There is another fiesta dedicated to the patron saint on the 6th to 7th of October, but this is a minor fiesta.

On November 1st, Villaluenga Del Rosario celebrates the Todos Los Santos (“All Saints’ Day”).

And, finally, on December 25th, Christmas Day is celebrated.
