Popular Traditions
The last week of February (varies yearly from the 17th to the 25th) is spent on the annual Carnival. This is a 4 to 5 day event, filled with laughter, live music, dancing, and fairs.
From March to April, Puerto Serrano observes the very important Lenten season. In the second or third week of April, the Semana Santa (“Holy Week”) culminates the Lenten season.
From July 20th to 22nd, the town honors its patron saint, St. Mary Magdalene, with a pilgrimage. Most of the town folks take part in the pilgrimage that starts at the town and ends at a secluded shrine outside of town.
Then from August 15th to 19th, the town holds its annual fair, an event similar to the Carnival.
On November 1st, the locals of Puerto Serrano remember their departed beloved on the Todos Los Santos (“All Saints’ Day”). And finally, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25th.
