The Alcazaba of Almeria is just one of the Islamic monuments most representative of Spain under Moorish rule. The structure highlights the importance of the city that became the principal port of Al - Andalus. There are free tours every week on Sunday.

Roquetas may be fast succumbing to modernity, but it still manages to preserve an unmistakable flare for every little thing that is authentic Spanish. There are many excellent restaurants serving delectable Spanish specialties, as well as lively bars, shops and a bustling fishing harbor. Roquetas truly has something for everyone.

Another much revered structure is the restored church of La Virgen del Rosario, built in 1789. The church houses an outstanding altarpiece, painted in 1957 by Jesus Perceval, depicting the life of the Virgin Mary.

The intriguing antiquities in Roquetas are needless to say, an undoubted crowd-drawer. Roquetas historic center is where seVeral monuments, such as the church or Nuestra Señora del Rosario, from the 17th century, the castle of Roquetas, and the Arab watchtower of Cerrillos are all found. All these are commendable for the discriminating visitor looking for something beyond Roquetas’ clean, well-kept beaches. There is a wide variety of services and facilities available to the visitor.

Towers and castles left of the city’s vibrant past remain commendably intact. One is the Castillo de Santa Ana, built in order to defend the coasts from Christian attack, and later from the Berber pirates. This defense is one of many in the coast of Almeria’s extensive defenses of an extensive network of Forts and Watch Towers. Moreover, The Castillo de Santa Ana, found in the city’s historical quarter, has been recently restored at the port. The Castle of Santa Ana is regarded as an important location for cultural events and exhibitions in Roquetas de Mar.
