Besides being surrounded by tourist pueblos, the area is main tourist attraction is the Nerja Caves, nestled in the limestone hills. Open to the public, annual music and dance festivals are held within its dramatic caverns. Moreover, the caves also feature ancient relics and artefacts and interesting cave wall paintings.
Still surviving from the period of Ferdinand’s and Isabella’s reign, the Balcón de Europa (“Balcony of Europe”) is a famous place to visit.
The church of El Salvador is situated in the old quarter of the town. The remaining structure was built in 1697 and modifications were made to the building in the period from 1776 to 1792. The interior of the church showcases 18th century frescoes and contemporary murals alike.
