Rio Verde Roman Villa
One of the most important archaeological remains from this period are the Rio Verde Roman Villa's. Dating back to the first century, the remains have been identified with the ancient Salduba (which means salt place), found some six kilometers from the center of Marbella.
Castle
The remains of the Castle are no more than a small part of what once formed part of the defense system of Marbella. The castle dates back to the end of the 9th century. Roman materials were used to build it as the great pillars testify in the lower parts of the building. After the reconquering of the castle, this was slightly modified, basically to prepare it for a possible war.
Basilica and Necrópolis Paleocristiana
The basilica was possibly built in the last third of the 9th century and was probably destroyed as a result of the tidal wave. The Basilica and Necrópolis Paleocristiana de Vega of the Sea, also known as Cemetery of the Moors, were discovered at the beginning of century, as a result of works of plantation of eucalyptuses.
The Ladrones Tower
The Ladrones Tower was most probably built in the Muslim period. This can be noticed when looking at the shape, the materials used and the way in which the beams have been laid. The building is a cone shape that is distributed inside in 3 rooms and a terrace.
Torre de las Bódevas
The construction of this tower dates back to the 16th century and was built to store the artillery. It is trunk-cone shaped and the materials used are based on rubble masonry. The tower is 13 m high and 8,30 m wide at the base; the entrance is 6,75 meters from the ground.
Plaza de los Naranjos
The Orange Square or Plaza de los Naranjos was built after Marbella was conquered by the King Fernando the Catholic in the 15th century. Within the square one can find the Town Hall, the Jail House, the Santiago Hermitage, the chief magistrates building, the Public Granary, the Corn Exchange and there is also a fountain that was built in the 18th century.
The Santo Cristo Church
The Santo Cristo Church is considered to be one of the most ancient Christian buildings in Marbella. The construction dates back to the 16th century although the building was enlarged in the 18th.
