Museums

Málaga is a city of museums as it has more than 20 of them. They vary from art museums such as the Picasso’s birthplace museum to the Religious Art Museum and the Popular Arts Museum to newer projects such as the Wine museum, the Holy Week Museum, the Heritage Museum and the Fine Arts Museum.

Alcazaba

Alcazaba is a Moorish construction of the 11th to 14th centuries. The tower that was built on Roman stone foundations certainly is the most outstanding architectural element and it was reconstructed in modern times.

Gibralfaro Castle

The Gibralfaro Castle, due to its strategic position on top of the hill, was an important element in the defence of the city. The castle was recently restored and now also has its own museum.

Cathedral

The Cathedral, or Catedral de la Encarnación, was erected on the site where the city's main mosque had stood during the eight centuries of Muslim domination. Building on the cathedral began in the first half of the 16th century and continued throughout the 17th and 18th century. Nowadays it is still unfinished as it is missing the top part of the main façade and the south tower is incomplete.

Roman theatre

The Roman theatre was discovered in 1951 during the works to build a garden at the entrance of the Citizens' Arts Centre. It was built in times of Augustus and was used until the 3rd century; after that it was used by the Moors.
