Most of the monuments that separate Almuñecar from other towns are the historical buildings that were built during the significant moments of the history of this town such as the San Miguel Castle and the Encarnacion Church.
Marina del Este
Located in the corner of Costa Tropical, Marina del Este is a deluxe complex comprised of apartments over the leisure port, and has under its wings many facilities such as restaurants, supermarkets, golf and tennis courts, bars and others.
San Miguel Castle
This castle is guessed that has been built in the Phoenician times and is one of the monuments that vibrantly tell about the history of the town.
Encarnacion Church
This church is designed by Juan of Herrera who was the architect of King Felipe II, and it was an important and impressive work of its time, bearing in mind that there were less than 1000 inhabitants living in the town. The interior consists of small chapels to either side of a wide aisle, leading to the main altar where it is located the statue of the Virgen de la Antigua, patron saint of Almuñecar.
Parque del Majuelo
This wonderful botanical garden contains probably Europe’s largest collection of subtropical plants, with more than 400 species, primarily from Brazil and Cuba. In this small botanical garden, stand the remains of a ancient Phoenician boat.
The Peña Escrita Ecological Park
Peña Escrita offers astonishing panoramic views of various landscapes including the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarra countryside, and the Tropical Valley. On its area of 400 hectares there are lots of pines, cistus, walnut trees, cypresses and dwarf oaks.
Loro Sexi Bird Park
The Loro Sexi Park has a wide selection of birds such peacocks, parrots, tucan, cockatoos, swans, ducks, and even ostriches. It is the kid’s favorite place, and is one of the noisiest places in town. The park is visited by around 30,000 visitors per year. The park opened first in 1987.
Almoñecar Aqua Tropical Water Park
This park is open mid July to mid September, and offers different entertainments and aquatic activities for all ages. It also has facilities such as bars, restaurants, and shaded areas.
Museo Arqueologico
This museum is also known as Cueva de los Siete Palacios and consists of the historical objects found in Phoenician necropolises of Laurita and Puente Nov. Has many different collection of local finds that offers visitors a fascinating peep into the town’s past. Among the collections there are a number of Roman objects from excavations in the Majuelo Park . Considered to be the most important piece in the museum is a beautiful Egyptian vase that dates back to the 17th century BC.
