Écija

Écija is a city located in the Andalusian countryside, 95 km from Seville.

There are several archaeological remains of ancient Greek and Roman settlements. Écija was known as Augusta Firma Astigi during Antiquity.

The town is famous for the magnificent baroque churches and also the splendid houses which date back to the 18th century when the local nobility bought homes in the town.

Unfortunately, in 1757 a major earthquake did considerable damage to many of the buildings, however the churches were restored.<>

The city offers the visitor many opportunities to see historical buildings such as the two towers of the Santa Maria church and the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista.The Museo Histórico Municipal has a fine collection of artifacts.

Another highlights are the impressive Palacio de Peñaflor on Calle Castellar with a curved facade decorated with frescos and the San Gil Gothic-Mudéjar church.

Daily buses will take you to Écija from Seville and Córdoba.
