Chipiona

This town of approximately 17,000 people traces back its history during the Roman period when King Fernando III of Spain reconquered it from earlier invaders, the Moors and the Visigoths.

A castle was built which was used as a fortress against the invading armies but today it has become a local attraction among tourists as a monastery with a view of the whole Chipiona. From its vintage point, the Guzman El Bueno Castle which is now a monastery can be seen, including the parish church.

Chipiona lighthouse is about 344 steps up the hill. Along each step, the past unravels itself. Known as Spain’s tallest lighthouse, it ranks 3rd in the world.
