Situated on a top of a hill 248 meters above the sea level, Castellar de la Frontera is located in the central of the area of Gibraltar. The reservoir of the Guadarranque river can be found immediately below the town location and the mountain range of Malaga can be seen north. On the south, the coast of Africa can be viewed from Castellar de la Frontera on a bright and clear day.
Castellar which means ‘site of the castle’ is the only appropriate name since the town is described as ‘a village within a castle’. This castle’s exterior perimeter is still very well preserved and shows characteristics of structures from the Kingdom of Granada. The irregular walling is balanced perfectly on the hill, bordered by the fortress towers, with houses and gardens within its walls and the Arch and the Palace jutting out beautifully.
