Almuñecar is the capital of Costa Tropical and is considered to be the most important resort in this region. Founded by the Phoenicians that once settled on this place primarily because of its good climate, Almuñecar is also very popular to the locals and the foreigners for its perfect beaches and climate especially in the summer months.
Almuñecar was once under the regime of the Phoenicians and then of the Romans and both civilizations left behind an enormous heritage. Its monuments scattered throughout the town are constant reminders of that history. Theaters, temples, and aqueducts in the town are living proofs of their settlement in the area.
Today, Almuñecar is one of the most significant and most visited attraction centers in Costa Tropical. Its waters provide excellent conditions for snorkeling and scuba diving and the riches of underwater life pleasure for the eyes. From El Peñon del Santo there are amazing views of the beaches and bays. To the west of El Peñon, on Cristobal beach, a many fishing boats can be seen resting on the seashore, waiting for the fishermen to get ready for the night trip out to the sea.
The agriculture in the region provides another evidence of the excellent climate. Most of the terrain is overflowing with tropical fruits such as avocados, mangos, pineapples and cherimoyas.
